Maestra Grace and other curanderos interviewed by ©Karen Garcia of the Los Angeles Times, February 8, 2023. The online article features beautiful photographs by K.C. Alfred.

Curanderismo is the holistic approach to healing the mind, body and spirit. A person who can heal others by looking at the whole of the person (mind, body and spirit) is called a curandera.

There are other types of healers under the curanderismo umbrella, and each has their own approach based on their teachings. For example, Sesma’s teachings are rooted in Mexican and Indigenous culture.

Both healers and researchers say Latinos and other Southern Californians, who aren’t necessarily connected to the culture, often turn to curanderismo when they’ve felt Western medicine didn’t meet their needs.

Rose Hosler, BSN, RN, HNB-BC, HWNC-BC
Healing Services
Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital
Mayfield Heights , OH
United States

Rose is truly a blessing to all the patients, families, and caregivers she encounters. Rose is always going above and beyond to support what is needed. One example of this is with a patient on 3 Seidman who was transitioning to hospice and having a hard time coping with pain and the transition home. Rose was asked to come up as soon as possible to support the patient with the nurse and nurse manager. She came to the unit within minutes and immediately started sitting, holding the patient’s hand, and talking in a calming voice to figure out what she could do to help the patient. Rose took over for the nurse manager rubbing the patient’s back and assumed care to create a connection one on one with the patient. Over the course of about 2 hours spent with the patient, Rose was able to help decrease the patient’s pain level from off the chart to a 2. She was also able to demonstrate interventions the patient could do at home to help with these episodes she was experiencing. Rose talked with the patient about her fears and anxiety and got the patient to be at a place of acceptance to transition home. This interaction truly demonstrates the care, compassion, and dedication Rose has to the patients she sees.

Another example of the impact Rose has been seen through her interaction with a caregiver. Rose had a caregiver who was dealing with the loss of multiple family members and was trying to give care and support to patients and families going through the end-of-life care. Rose was there to talk through what the caregiver was feeling and help push past the emotions and deal with the grief the caregiver was feeling. She was able to help relax and re-center the caregiver by providing reiki, aromatherapy, and offering other support touch. Rose was able to support this caregiver through such a difficult time and made an impact on how this caregiver can support others through grief. Her selflessness, empathy, and offering of support make a difference to everyone she encounters.
