AMERICAN HOLISTIC NURSES' CERTIFICATION CORPORATION

Florence Nightingale asked the following:

"What will this world be on August 11, 1999?  And what in 1999 shall we wish to have been doing now?  And what shall we wish not to have been doing now?  What of all the things that we do or say or think, will it have signified that we should have done, or said, or thought, then? And what will it not have signified? ...What will this world be on August 11, 1999?"

And then she answered, "What we have made it."

Florence Nightingale, 1873.

BACKGROUND

March of 1997, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing adopted a white paper stating:

•Nursing schools are "change agents" and "keepers" of core values;

•Nursing is contextual, holistic in nature, nurtured in human relationships;

•Nurses attend to the meaning of an illness and that such meaning is vital for the healing process.

 "Most unique to nursing, however, will be the profession's continued focus on the whole person across the life span, taking into account developmental, physical and mental health, and spiritual needs in a comprehensive approach to care". American Association of Colleges of Nursing Vision of Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Education: The Next Decade, (1997, p. 5).

AHNCC's ENDORSEMENT PROGRAM

AHNCC's aims to facilitate the advancement of Holistic Nursing. Consistent with Nightingale's vision and the recent committment by AACN, AHNCC designed a School Endorsement Program in 2000. Our goals were to recognize Nursing Schools that provide Holistic Nursing programs and to facilitate their graduates in the Certification Process. Since then AHNCC has Endorsed several programs from Nursing Schools around the country. A full list of these programs can be found below.
